What to Expect? A BEF 2015 Experience Report.

NATO Council Member and Brussels European Forum 2015 participant Clayton Sullivan played the German Defense Minister during this year’s conference. Find here what his experience looked like. We thank you, dear Clayton, for your report and hope to see you next year in Brussels.

When I originally got to the conference in Leuven in late March, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I wouldn’t say I was scared but I was definitely anxious to see how the week was going to turn out. I can definitely say the experience well surpassed my expectations. Not only was it quite an honour and a privilege to work with fellow delegates from all over Europe but it was also a treat to play a role that you aren’t familiar with. For example, I played the role of the Defense Minister of Germany Mrs. von der Leyen. I had to study German political standpoints on key issues but also had to stay independent and not let my personal nationalistic views shadow who I was trying to play. Overall, it was a great conference with an incredible staff. They know how to make it interesting but also are very helpful with how it runs. I look forward to going back next year if I get the opportunity too.
